Institute of experts has quite a long record. However, it is highly-developed only in the field of judicial expertise. The article is devoted to the present-day issues of expert profession as a particular case of special knowledge. The author points out the cases when in the Russian legislation the notion of "special study" is incorrectly substituted with the notion of "expertise".
